Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the columella, allowing the surgeon to directly visualize nasal structures — preferred for complex reshaping. Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions entirely inside the nostrils with no visible external scarring but offers more limited surgical access.

The cast is removed at about one week and initial results are apparent, but the nose will be noticeably swollen. Most swelling resolves within 3-6 months, though subtle tip refinement continues for 12-18 months. Patients with thicker skin may require up to 2 years to see their definitive result.

Revision rhinoplasty can address residual asymmetry, breathing issues, or aesthetic concerns, but surgeons recommend waiting at least 12 months for all swelling to resolve. Revision surgery is more complex due to scar tissue, so choosing a surgeon experienced in revision cases is critical. Approximately 5-15% of patients seek revision.

Candidates should have fully developed facial bone structure — typically by age 15-16 for girls and 17-18 for boys — and be in good overall health. Results depend on existing skin thickness, cartilage strength, and facial anatomy. Active smokers should quit at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.

Closed rhinoplasty leaves no visible external scars since all incisions are inside the nostrils. Open rhinoplasty produces a small scar on the columella that typically fades to a nearly invisible line within 3-6 months. Sun protection during healing is important to prevent scar darkening.
