Good candidates have hip arthritis causing significant pain and mobility limitations that have not improved with conservative treatment. There is no strict age cutoff — patients from age 19 to 90 have successfully undergone the procedure. Patients with a BMI of 40 or higher are recommended to participate in a weight-loss program first.

The anterior approach accesses the hip from the front, separating muscles rather than cutting through them, often resulting in less early post-operative pain. The posterior approach cuts through some muscle but offers the surgeon better visibility. After two months, both approaches produce the same excellent long-term outcomes.

Ask about the surgeon's annual volume of hip replacements (aim for 50+ per year), the implant brand and bearing surface they recommend, their preferred surgical approach and why, expected hospital stay duration, and what physiotherapy is included in the package. Also ask about their revision rate and whether the implant brand is serviceable by orthopedic surgeons in your home country.

Ask the overseas surgeon which implant brand and model they plan to use, and confirm it is internationally distributed (major brands like DePuy, Stryker, Zimmer Biomet, and Smith & Nephew operate globally). Request a copy of the implant identification card showing the exact components. Your home orthopedic surgeon will need this information for any future imaging, adjustments, or revision surgery.

Most orthopedic centers recommend staying near the hospital for 10-14 days after hip replacement for follow-up appointments and initial rehabilitation. Airlines typically require 2-3 weeks after surgery before flying, though some allow earlier travel with a medical clearance letter and business-class seating for extra legroom. Plan for a 3-week minimum trip duration.
